The Fall, Returning to the Land and to the Great Mother

Autumnal Blessings means what? A time of plenty? Halloween? Making time to get together with those we care and love? A change of Season? The Holiday journey? Preparing to spend most of our money? Richer food? etc. etc.
As an Indigenous astrologer, it is paying more and more attention to the Earth and its peoples and what is connected to them, us, Her.
When I think of autumn, I always envision a bridge because I feel it is the one season that asks us to take a journey into some more intense changes in our lives, be it physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual. The elementals during a season change affect us on all levels. For Autumn we are facing a change that for most of us would prefer the other way around, from winter to spring. We actually don't even look for a bridge from winter to spring, we just start to want to fly into it.
However, from Autumn to winter we need a bridge because we want to have a firmer footing on the Earth. Our surroundings are adjusting most quickly to the moon and to the nocturnal aspects of the planet and environment. Many folks repeatedly reflect on the phrase "It's the time when the veil is lifted". Well, I have to be a spoilsport because there are no veils. There are no separations between the spiritual context of our world and the physical. The spiritual is always there with us. It is during seasonal change the Earth works to defuse the human manipulative distractions away (as I believe She loves and cares for our consciousness so much) so that we have the remaining part of the year to pay attention during a predominant era of nature's silence and power in colder energy. Paranormal investigators suggest that colder environments imply that a supernatural presence is strong. I would suggest that same idea with autumn and winter. Though the energies are different than the spring, they are more serious and educational. We are reminded of the teachings of our Elders and ancestors. Thus all our ancestors placed importance on such wisdom and could not help but remember and honor those in the spirit world during this season. Hence if we disregard them now we will have difficulties gaining a meaningful personal connection until another appropriate time. Especially if we don't make a habit of doing so, to begin with.

To make things more interesting, I like the image and the archetype of the Ancient Egyptian God Anubis. Anubis for many folks looks disconcerting, all dark and jackal-like, who hangs around tombs and follows the pathway of the moon. Many times he is depicted with the Ancient Egyptian God Horus. Anubis as psychopomp on the spiritual river bank awaits Horus who is riding on the barge of 1000 years bringing the deceased soul to meet up with him.
The deceased spirit is escorted by Anubis into the new realm. Anubis is then the protector of the soul and prepares it for entering the sanctum in the underworld where the soul itself discerns the value of his/her heart choices. It is from the soul's own examinations that determine the appropriate future journey for itself.
The ancient Egyptians literally took measures to ritualize within the physical realm (embalming process, sarcophagus, ceremony, and tomb building) the undisclosed spiritual and metaphysical journey to help the soul through the deceased physical body obtain its possible desired spiritual potential. As no one knows anyone's potential but the one who is on the Earth walk and the soul that is journeying with the Creators. However, the ancient Egyptians, as well as many of our ancient ancestors, truly respected the power and reality of the spiritual unseen world and supported everyone towards a beneficial journey within it.
So who is Anubis for us? I find Anubis like all ancient gods/goddesses and their mythologies archetypes to support our own mythologies. The archetype of Anubis is what we carry and honor when we are going through a transformation. Why wouldn't we want our best friend canine companion with us, as we know he/she is loyal and trustworthy and will go through anything we experience. Hence Anubis's spiritually metaphoric connection also represents all that we love and trust that have come before us and who have already journeyed a similar path ... “our ancestors”. They lead the way for us if we are courageous. They will be there waiting. Many folks when they make their transitions are known to see relatives and dear ones. Anubis archetype allows us to understand that what we are traversing is real and serious stuff, but we are with our ancestors and those who are supporting and guiding us on our journey. Hence a very important process to pay close attention to and honor.
In astrology, I associate Anubis archetype with Scorpio and Scorpio's passionate journey to get to Sagittarius, (our personal truth) with complete honesty and integrity. So, when we arrive at Winter Solstice we can find a rebirth within ourselves in order to envision a new framework in our upcoming adventure.
As a musician, I understand why music is most pronounced within our collective consciousness during these darker months as well as the need and/or desire to produce it more often. My Indigenous ancestors knew that music was the first language of communication. And if delivered with wisdom and knowledge within its craft, offers powerful and also sublime communication within the spiritual world and spirit. Also, music touches and activates our hearts to be more inclined to seek the emotional and spiritual that is the activator of our authentic mental wisdom.

I find the most important gem of all within our journey during autumn's downtime is to reach out to those we feel warm inside with, as well as those who are in the spirit world with honor and thanksgiving. May all our journies during this time be with our feet on the ground and our hearts open to what our Great Mother Earth brings in our lives. Blessed internal journey.
